Have you ever avoided doing something because it scared you? Then we're in the same boat. In fact, I'm pretty sure I own that boat. I'm a master procrastinator when it comes to doing the things that scare me. The number of projects I've started that have gone unfinished because I was scared... is too many to count. We can make up all sorts of excuses for ourselves as to why we couldn't do something.
Didn't start that blog you wanted to try? "I just didn't have time."
Never even plugged in that sewing machine? "It doesn't make sense for me to learn something new."
Stakes in the ground but your garden is still just grass? "I wouldn't be any good at it anyway."
Still in the same place you were a year ago, even though you've been dreaming of a big change? "I don't want to rock the boat. Things are fine the way they are.
Let me tell you something. It's ok to be scared.
In fact, it's absolutely, 100% normal to be scared to try something new. If you aren't a little scared to do something, then it's probably not for you. Whether you want to make a big life change or pick up a new hobby, both can be scary. But you'll never know unless you do it. And that means you'll have to do it scared.
I'm freaking terrified to be hosting EmpowerHER. You might have guessed that I've never done something like this before. It's nerve wracking to plan this whole thing. I'm relying on help from so many people and a ton of Google searching, but I know in my heart that this event will be worth it. And I'm so scared it'll flop. But I have to try. Something this scary has to be important, right?
What are you scared of?
Do it anyway. Tell your best friend, your mom, your spouse, your mailman! Start letting others hold you accountable for that thing you're scared to do. I'm so grateful for that text from my sister that comes at least once a week: "Have you gotten any more sponsors yet?" (Getting sponsors for EmpowerHER scares me the most. Leave it to sisters to keep you honest.) When you finally take the leap and allow others to leap with you, everything changes. For the better.
I hope you do it scared. It's going to be amazing.
XO, Courtney
Ps. You know what else I'm scared to try? Needle point. Yep, I'm scared to try my hand at needle point! Back in 4th grade I tried to sew a pillow for a 4-H project and my mom ended up holding my hand through the whole thing. I was terrible at sewing! So the thought of needle point, knitting, quilting, sewing, or anything even remotely related to making something with a needle and thread actually makes my hands sweat a little. But for Mother's Day this year, I bought myself a needle point kit. Guess where it is? Yep. Still in the box. I'm too scared to try it. But dang it! After writing this, I'm going to take my own advice and just do it scared. (Yes, I will post pictures of my attempt at needle point. Please don't laugh.)
